Day 1 · 14 Mar

Alameda

The guide

Arrival in Lisbon and fast metro to Alameda, a convenient and well-connected base. First abundant and cheap Portuguese dinner (carne à la portuguesa, bacalhau) and first — of many — pastel de nata of the weekend.

Field notes

Surprise Wizz Air flight: destination revealed on the board, Lisbon! Dinner at Ighema, excellent and cheap. First mission accomplished: our first pastéis.

Day 2 · 15 Mar

Baixa · Alfama · Belém

The guide

A full day: the viewpoint above the Elevador de Santa Justa (1902), the route of tram 28 through the steep alleys, Praça do Comércio and the Alfama district. In the afternoon Belém by electric scooter and Belém Tower; Bolt (taxis) are very cheap for getting around.

Field notes

Best pastel de nata in the city found by Leo. Ponte 25 de Abril identical to the Golden Gate (same company!). The ultimate surprise: Lila and Nicolò land without knowing we're waiting for them — Lila almost faints. Piña colada inside a pineapple in Belém.

Day 3 · 16 Mar

Castelo de São Jorge · Jerónimos

The guide

Morning at Castelo de São Jorge (city view and blue-necked peacocks): the €25 Lisboa Card is worth it for attractions and transport. Return to Belém for the Jerónimos Monastery in Manueline style and, above all, the original Pastéis de Belém, the only ones with the monks' secret recipe.

Field notes

Pastéis before every stop, obviously. The immense castle, the beautiful peacocks. The Pastéis de Belém are, for us, absolutely the best. Then the airport: we leave Lila and Nic to continue the journey for all of us.
